On 22-25 May this year, EU citizens from across the 28 Member States will elect a new European Parliament, comprising 751 members (MEPs) to represent their interests from 2014 to 2019. As the European Parliament is the only directly elected European Institution, these elections are a unique opportunity for the European diabetes community to encourage EU policy-makers to commit to the diabetes cause.
In order to help you better understand the European elections and to support you in your advocacy work, IDF Europe has developed a European Elections Toolkit. The toolkit looks at the European Parliament, the political groups that compose it and how it influences legislation. It also looks more closely at the upcoming European elections and at the challenges and opportunities they represent for the diabetes community, providing information about candidates (lists and websites) as well as tips on how to reach out to them.

Support the Diabetes Pledge
Ahead of the European Elections, IDF Europe has also issued a Diabetes Pledge, which aims to gather support from candidate MEPs to act on diabetes. The pledge lists the policy priorities that IDF Europe wants to see advanced at European level for the next legislature (2014-2019). Click here to access the pledge.
Gain more insight on European political parties with the EU Elections Monthly Focus
