Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease and the seventh leading cause of death by illness. It is estimated that one person is diagnosed every 5 minutes. The Australian Diabetes Council expects the number of people diagnosed with diabetes to rise beyond 3.6 million within the next five years.1

Indigenous Australians are 10 times as likely to develop diabetes compared with other Australians. At the turn of the current century, death rates from diabetes among
Indigenous Australians were almost 15 times higher than the general population.2
