Did you know?Diabetes is on the increase throughout Pakistan, and especially in the urban centres, which continue to grow daily as migrants arrive from the rural areas in search of employment opportunities and improved quality of life. The National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology puts the figure at nearly 14 million people. A recent World Bank report warns that Pakistan is facing a health crisis with rising rates of diabetes, obesity, heart disease obesity and other non-communicable diseases, which are disproportionately affecting poor families and worsening the poverty situation. According to the report, Capitalizing on the Demographic Transition: Tackling Non-communicable Diseases in South Asia, chronic disease currently accounts for 59% cent of the total disease burden in Pakistan. 1.
