Wim Wientjens from The Netherlands is currently a Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). In the past, he has been a member of the IDF Executive Board (1997-2000) and Chair of the IDF European Region (2003-2006).
Dr Wientjens has been living with diabetes since 1951, when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He studied and holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. He has been managing director at the Institute for Applied Scientific Research TNO Delft from which he is now retired.
Wim Wientjens has been the President of the Dutch Diabetes Association (Organization of Patients - 1994), a Vice-President of the Dutch Diabetes Federation (Co-operative Society between Patients, Physicians and Nurses - 1995) and a member of the Board of the Dutch Diabetes Foundation (Funding Organization for Diabetic Research – 1996-2002)
“As a person with diabetes for 53 years and after a very active life as a biochemist and as director of a research institute, I would be very happy to give a lot of my free time to the benefit of the people with diabetes" said Dr Wientjens recently. "Not only because of the epidemic growth of diabetes and the necessary good treatment and prevention, but also and even more because of the improvement of the quality of life for all people with diabetes. With good education, with all human and social rights, without any discrimination.”
