Confirmed lightings total passes 1000

The information that we have received over the last few days confirms that more than 1000 monuments and landmarks around the world went blue for World Diabetes Day. This total excludes the many homes that were also lit.

UK Member of Parliament shows support for World Diabetes Day

In the United Kingdom, Barbara Keeley, MP for Worsley, pledged her support for World Diabetes Day (14 November) at a meeting in Westminster organised by health charity Diabetes UK.

Diabetes UK launched a report called "Supporting Self Management for people with diabetes" at the meeting on 11 November. The report looks at what people with diabetes need to ensure that they are equipped to manage their diabetes.

WDD 2009 attracts global coverage

As we collect the results of the media outreach for World diabetes 2009, it is clear that the campaign can claim a global success in terms of media exposure. The tremendous commitment displayed by IDF member associations and countless other organizations and individuals to secure recognition of the day seem to have paid dividends.

Diabetes Awareness for WDD at the European Parliament

On the 10-11 November, The International Diabetes Federation European Region (IDF EUR) and MEP Simon Busuttil hosted diabetes awareness events in the European Parliament to mark the build up to World Diabetes Day. The sucessful events were held in collaboration with the Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND), the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), and Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE) and the Alliance for European Diabetes Research (EURADIA).

The pictures of what looks like a really successful World Diabetes Day 2009 campaign are flooding through Flickr and the World Diabetes Day museum. Just two days after 14 November and we already count more than 500 pictures.

Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaims World Diabetes Day

Governor of California and former Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued a proclamation in support of World Diabetes Day.

The proclamation states that "Prevention is key for the elimination of California’s diabetes epidemic and its associated costs. Fortunately, the impact of both type 2 diabetes and prediabetes can be reduced with simple lifestyle changes, including a healthy diet, weight loss and physical fitness."
