Diabetes Atlas 2012 Update: Out now!

To mark World Diabetes Day, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has released the latest global and regional diabetes statistics.

Find out, in detail, how diabetes is affecting the world in 2012 with estimates on mortality, prevalence, expenditure and undiagnosed cases.

The 2012 Update is available in English, French and Spanish.

I wonder why doesn't make a distinction between diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. Both are rising, but the causes are different. To understand why both types are rising, wouldn't it be necessary to distinguish the statistics? Thanks and good work!

Dear Ruth,

Thank you for your question. We are unable to make a distinction between diabetes type 1 and 2 in adults because most of the studies we base our calculations on do not make the distinction. It would be important to look further into that distinction as the implications for management and care would be very important.

I agree with Ruth! Segregation between statistics for type 1 and type 2 will be very useful and can give us important insights regarding the latest trends.
