The sections in this chapter highlight the linkages between diabetes and development. The first section analyses the estimates of diabetes prevalence by income group and shows the overwhelming burden of diabetes in low- and middle-income countries. The following section examines the drivers of the epidemic in every country and focuses on the especially vulnerable position of the socially disadvantaged in any society. This is followed by a section examining the established associations between diabetes and tuberculosis and the implications for a double burden of these two diseases in some countries. The final section in the chapter looks at how diabetes impacts the achievement of the Millenium Development Goals and the key role it plays in meeting the targets.
