The year of the diabetic foot and beyond

The increasing global incidence of diabetes continues to provoke a corresponding increase in numbers of disabling and potentially life-threatening complications. Those affecting people’s feet are among the most feared. The amputation of a limb is one of the most costly of the diabetes complications in terms both of health economics and the devastating impact it has on people’s lives. The urgent need to address the resulting human and economic burden lay behind the decision of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) to designate ‘diabetes and foot care’ as the theme for World Diabetes Day 2005. While November 14 was celebrated in multitudinous events by many thousands of people around the world, 2005 has marked the shift to a year-long World Diabetes Day campaign: this really has been the ‘year of the foot’.
