Experts Launch First Ever Global Diabetes Plan in New York

On the eve of the UN NCD Summit the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) unveils the premier Global Diabetes Plan

WHAT: Latest figures from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reveal that currently 366 million people have diabetes, 4.6 million deaths are due to diabetes and US$ 465 billion is spent on care for diabetes. This disease is one of the century’s greatest health challenges and remains on a relentlessly upwards trajectory.

IDF has brought together world experts to develop a coherent framework of action to respond to the diabetes challenge and halt avoidable deaths as well as improve the lives of people with diabetes.  These cost-effective solutions for action by governments, health care professionals and the global diabetes community are presented in IDF’s Global Diabetes Plan 2011-2021.

At the same time IDF will launch a series of policy briefs describing a range of key issues relating to diabetes and the necessary policy responses.  These include: The Early Origins of Diabetes; Diabetes: A Global Health and Development Challenge; Diabetes in Pregnancy: Protecting Maternal Health.

WHO: IDF President Jean Claude Mbanya and IDF Vice-President Ruth Colagiuri who guided the development of the Plan will speak about the global challenge of diabetes and the cost-effective solutions available to combat it at the Global Diabetes Symposium.  The event is co-hosted by IDF and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
