This is the latest instalment from Charles Mattocks, IDF's Blue Circle Champion, as he takes to the roads of the USA to raise diabetes awareness
Atlanta was next-up on the tour. We did three events in total and all were amazing.
The first one was at a medical centre where many elderly people showed up to share their diabetes stories. We made simple food samples and distributed recipe cards and ideas which they could use at home. We of course had our diabetes educators on board as well.
The next stop involved two events, including a cooking demo. As I take my focus to my new TV show and diabetes film, I am not sure if I will be doing many more cooking demos, which is a shame.
The tour is now winding-down and I feel a sense of sadness. I have seen first-hand how people’s lives have been touched by our activities. I wish I had the funds to keep this going all year round.
I think the saddest part of this last tour stage, was seeing someone who I filmed for my documentary a few months ago. When I first met her and her husband, they seemed to be in control of their diabetes, now they are faced with the possibility of limb amputation. The life and joy they had when I first met them seems to be slowly slipping away.
We need to create more ways to engage and inspire people with diabetes and raise awareness of the disease to those at risk. I will miss some of the people we have met along this journey and I hope and pray they make the changes needed.
One thing I can say about this tour is that just a small amount of giving can change a large amount of hearts.
So Atlanta we came and we rocked and on to the next city!
