Since 2012, IDF Europe awards two IDF Europe Prizes in Diabetes yearly to reward excellence, innovation, and commitment in diabetes: the IDF Europe Young Researcher Award, and the IDF Europe Long-Standing Achievement Award.
These Awards aim at increasing awareness about diabetes and acknowledging outstanding individuals who are dedicated to improving the lives of people with diabetes.
In 2016, three Awards have been assigned: one for a Young Researcher, (sponsored by AstraZeneca) one for an association, in recognition of its Long-Standing Achievement. (sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company) and one focusing on Social Media.(sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company)

- Shoqata E Diabetit Në Shqipëri (Albanian Diabetes Association) in the Long-Standing Achievement category. The oldest diabetes association in Albania, established in 1991, it has over 4’500 members. On top of defending the rights of people with diabetes in Albania and raising public awareness, over the last 25 years the Association has also trained health care professionals and implemented screening activities.
- Dr Michael Gejl Jensen (Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark) in the Young Researcher category, for very promising work focusing on the relationship between diabetes, diabetes drugs and brain functioning. The background for this line of research is the increased risk of cognitive deficiency that is invariably seen with type 2 diabetes. Dr Jensen earned his MD degree in 2007 and his PhD in 2013. His career combines advanced research with patient care and teaching - he is a valued mentor for PhD students and a popular teacher at Medical School.
- #dedoc, the Deutsche Diabetes Online Community in the Social Media category. #dedoc is an online platform where people with diabetes meet, share and exchange thoughts and information on a variety of diabetes-related subjects. Established in 2012 by Bastian Hauck, a passionate advocate for diabetes and living with diabetes himself, #dedoc focuses on everyday life issues. In just four years, it has attracted more than 10 million twitter impressions!

This Prize is awarded to a young researcher, under the age of 40, who is involved in innovative patient-oriented research in diabetes and/or its complications. Their work should demonstrate commitment to diabetes research leading to improved health outcomes for people with diabetes.

IDF Europe is a federation of 70 national associations in 47 countries. We recognise the endless dedicated work of these associations to support the lives of people with diabetes in their respective countries and to prevent the condition. In 2016, the Prize for Long-Standing Achievement will be awarded to an association.

In recent years, we have seen the emergence of a new type of communication around health issues where people directly affected by a disease become the focal point for the flow information. Social media, including personal blogs and exchange platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. now play a major role in communicating health messages which, when conveying accurate information, can be a great source of inspiration and support. For people with diabetes this usually translates into the provision of peer information mostly regarding daily self-management, patient empowerment and rights. The feelings of empathy, proximity and of being understood created by these channels are essential and demonstrate the success of such online platforms.
It takes time, dedication and talent to provide accurate, frequently updated and interesting information in a format which is of interest to the readers. IDF Europe would like to recognise this commitment by way of a Social Media Prize in Diabetes.
