Member Associations and local health professionals have the opportunity to host programmes that are based on the IDF Curriculum for Diabetes Health Professional Education (2009).
The multidisciplinary programme aims to:
- enhance knowledge and skills of the health professional in diabetes education, prevention and management;
- increase the standing of health professionals in the health-care community and;
- increase respect for the role of the diabetes educator as a legitimate autonomous specialist area of practice with a strong interdisciplinary collaborative team basis.
The programme may be from 3 – 5 days in length and the content tailored to the needs of the participants. The host IDF Member Association or other organization will work closely with members of DECS to customize the program and add faculty and content from the area.
Stage 1 – three to five days, workshop with plenty of problem solving, group work and role play.
Stage 2 - participants complete a preapproved project in their community that addresses a need of people with diabetes in a specific community or furthers the education of health professionals in a specific area. Mentoring is available for the project duration.
Stage 3 – six to 12 months later the participants report on and discuss their projects, and attend an advanced educational workshop.
Healthcare professionals such as primary care physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, psychologists, and podiatrists would benefit from attending such a programme.
Participants should have a professional degree, an interest in diabetes management and at least one year of practice in their profession.
