Emergencies and disasters

An acute lack of access to insulin may arise in an unpredictable manner because of sudden crises or natural disasters. In recent years, there have been wars, floods and economic crises in many countries.

The Task Force on Insulin, Test Strips and Other Diabetes Supplies has on several occasions assisted IDF member associations in procuring insulin and diabetes supplies for disaster areas. The Task Force collaborates with major insulin and diabetes supplies manufacturers and other not-for-profit organizations, such as Insulin for Life Australia to distribute emergency supplies in situations of acute need. Most major companies have an established system to deal with emergencies and disasters.

The Task Force and its partners have provided assistance in the following emergencies:

  • Earthquake in Haiti (2010)
  • Earthquake in Peru (2007)
  • Hurricane Katrina (2005)
  • South-East Asia Tsunami (2004)

Insulin for Life also successfully delivered much needed diabetes supplies to the Lebanese Diabetes Society during the military conflict in Lebanon in August 2006, in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding that it has signed with IDF.
