International Curriculum for Diabetes Health Professional Education

The International Diabetes Federation is pleased to present the revised edition of the International Curriculum for Diabetes Health Professional Education, originally published in 2002.
 
The need for consistent preparation of diabetes educators has been recognized within IDF for a number of years. As a consequence, this document was developed to assist individuals and organizations to prepare high quality diabetes education programmes for healthcare providers throughout the world. Indeed, a comprehensive curriculum is fundamental to the education of well prepared and clinically effective diabetes educators.

The IDF curriculum can be readily adapted to meet the particular needs of local health professionals, institutions and organizations. It can be used to facilitate the training of health professionals from a variety of disciplines and at different levels of diabetes knowledge.

This new edition of the curriculum includes the latest evidence-based references, several new modules, and information reflecting new and innovative approaches to diabetes management and education. But as we review and revise this curriculum, further novel approaches to diabetes management and education continue to appear. So this document must be a living one that can evolve as new evidence becomes available.
 
In 2006, IDF published a series of slides, ‘Diabetes education modules’, to provide the curriculum with supplementary didactic material. Nineteen modules that address the curriculum objectives are available, each with PowerPoint slides and teaching notes. Some modules are also available in audiovisual format.

IDF now offers a Recognition Programme whereby organizations offering courses in diabetes education and management are recognized for meeting international standards.

The curriculum is available in book form in English and on CD-ROM in Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Both the print copy and the CD-ROM can be ordered from the IDF online shop.
