The Lancet launches 4th series on NCDs and development

Produced by some of the world’s most eminent scientists and academics, including from within the NCD Alliance civil society network, The Lancet has launched a new series on NCDs. This series provides the evidence for NCDs as a development issue and proposes cost-effective interventions to accelerate progress and avert millions of deaths worldwide.

The series was launched on February 11 in London with an opening statement from Helen Clark, Administrator UNDP. Addressing an audience at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand said that “NCDs pose a significant threat to improving and sustaining human development progress in the 21st century”. In her closing remarks, Clark emphasised the need for urgent action and the consequences if nothing is done, “Failure to curb the growing NCD epidemic now will lead to a significant toll on human life and well-being, and to great strain on health systems and family and public budgets”.
