Guyana lies in Northern South America, bordered by Brazil, Suriname, Venezuela and the North Atlantic Ocean. A former Dutch, then British colony, Guyana achieved independence in 1966 but remained a member of the British Commonwealth. In 2008, it became a signatory to the UNASUR Constitutive Treaty which officially established twelve South American Nations as the ‘Union of South American Nations.'
