April 5, 2013, marks the 1000-day milestone towards the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are the most successful global anti-poverty push in history and comprise of 8 concrete goals aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and deprivation.
To date significant progress has been made across many of the MDGs. However, global trends have created challenges to reaching these goals.
The UN Political Declaration adopted at the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs in 2011 and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development last year, affirmed that diabetes and other NCDs are leading threats to development in the 21st century and are undermining the achievements of the MDG’s.
On the occasion of the 1000-day milestone, the UN is organising a global 1000 minute digital media rally to raise awareness and inspire action around the MDGs and a post-2015 development framework.
According to Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the UN “Action now will improve lives and add momentum as we look beyond 2015 to the challenges of sustainable development”.
