A new project has been launched to assess the awareness, treatment and implications of diabetic retinopathy globally. Results are intended to inform decision-making and policy development around this common and serious complication of diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) will be holding a panel discussion in Geneva on 20 May to discuss the role of diabetes and other Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda. The early morning event will focus on the importance of access to medicines and care for people with diabetes, including access to life-saving insulin.

In developing countries a lack of refrigerators to store insulin is often a barrier for people with diabetes. Children require insulin injections two or more times a day, and insulin can only be stored at room temperature for one month.

The Ministry of Health and Gender of the Republic of Maldives awarded the Diabetes Society of Maldives for ‘Most Outstanding Public Health Service’ to the Community by an NGO at the World Health Day 2014 Celebrations for the Project 200 Islands.
