Spa4Diabetes kicks off World Diabetes Day Campaign with Red, Pink & Blue Event

In the USA, Spa4Diabetes, a friend of the World Diabetes Day 2008 campaign, has responded to the International Diabetes Federation's call on groups worldwide to raise awareness of diabetes on World Diabetes Day 2009 by teaming up with heart and breast cancer groups to organize a joint awareness event in Cincinnati, Ohio.

IDF joins forces with Rotary International

The International Diabetes Federation will attend the 100th Rotary International Convention in Birmingham, UK from June 21-24 to discuss the global epidemic of diabetes and the joint efforts to tackle the disease. On June 22, IDF experts will participate in a session on “Rotarians Respond to the Worldwide Epidemic of Diabetes." The session is organized by the Rotarian Action Group (RAG) which is led by President Wayne Edwards.

IDF to address gaps in diabetes education through global network of centres

A person with diabetes needs to make a multitude of decisions related to managing their diabetes each day. To do this they need to acquire the knowledge, skills and ability necessary for self care. This requires education. In addition, the growing number of people with diabetes is putting stress on healthcare systems globally. Healthcare professionals need support to ensure that appropriate education is available to people with diabetes to help them manage their diabetes.

Visa alert for delegates

When travelling to Montreal, all delegates should make sure that they meet the requirements to enter Canada. All visitors must:

  • have a valid travel document, such as a passport.
  • be in good health.
  • satisfy an immigration officer that they have ties, such as a job, home and family, that will take them back to their country of origin.
  • satisfy an immigration officer that they will leave Canada at the end of their visit.
  • have enough money for their stay.

Swine flu update for Congress participants

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has received a few queries as to the impact of the H1N1 influenza (so-called swine flu) outbreak on the Congress. An outbreak of the H1N1 flu strain originated in Mexico, and was clinically identified in April 2009.

IDF to host educational workshops in Latin America

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) will host workshops in Buenos Aires, Argentina from June 11-14, focused on clinical diabetes guideline implementation and diabetes education for health ministries, diabetes associations and healthcare professionals throughout its South and Central American Region (SACA).

News media registration open for 20th World Diabetes Congress

News media registration for the biennial meeting of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is now open. The 20th World Diabetes Congress will be held October 18-22, 2009 at Palais des Congrès de Montréal (Montréal Convention Centre) in Montreal, Canada.

One of the world's largest medical conferences, the 20th World Diabetes Congress is expected to draw 15,000 delegates, over 400 high level speakers and more than 200 national diabetes associations from over 160 countries.
