Global diabetes community to meet in Montreal

The congress programme for the 20th World Diabetes Congress addresses a broad range of diabetes issues, from the latest scientific advances to cutting-edge information on education, diabetes care, advocacy and awareness, as well as the latest in diabetes essential medicines.
IDF to elect new leadership in Montreal
The member associations of the International Diabetes Federation will meet at the IDF General Council in Montreal, where they will choose the leadership for the next IDF triennium.
Conversation Map™ Tools and training now available
Conversation MapTM Tools aim to improve diabetes self-management and enhance interaction between healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes.
IDF and its partners have thus far developed 17 Conversation Map™ tools for use in 46 different countries and training has been organized for 88 expert trainers. At country level, 127 trainings have been carried out with 2,678 local health educators receiving training in how to use the Conversation Map™ tools.

IDF forms international coalition to tackle NCD epidemic
The International Diabetes Federation is partnering with the World Heart Federation and the International Union Against Cancer to push for international action to combat the global epidemic of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

In October, IDF will publish a special issue of its flagship magazine addressing the theme of diabetes self-management.
IDF to fund diabetes documentary for BBC World
The International Diabetes Federation is to collaborate with Rockhopper TV to produce a diabetes documentary for BBC World.
Rockhopper TV is a leading documentary maker with an established track record in producing thought provoking documentaries on key global issues intended to reach both decision makers and the public.The diabetes documentary will air as part of the ‘Kill or Cure?’ series on BBC World – Rockhopper’s long-running health series of half-hour documentaries.

Second round of BRIDGES funding sees rise in applications
BRIDGES, the IDF-led funding programme dedicated to translational research, is ensuring that lessons learned in clinical practice reach people affected by diabetes.
The second round of applications for BRIDGES funding ran from January to June this year. With 147 letters of intent received from more than 50 countries, the number of applicants has increased by an impressive 36% as compared to the first round. The final selection will be at the end of this year and announced in January 2010.

IDF to launch new guidelines at World Diabetes Congress
The IDF Task Force on Clinical Guidelines will launch four new global guidelines at the World Diabetes Congress in Montreal this October.
The new guidelines are:
- Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose in Non-Insulin Treated Type 2 Diabetes.
- Global Guideline for Diabetes in Pregnancy.
- Global Guideline for Type 1 Diabetes
- Global Guideline for Type 2 Diabetes
A further guideline on oral health for people with diabetes, produced by the IDF Working Group on Diabetes and Oral Health, will also be launched in Montreal.
IDF Task Force to assess barriers to care in Kyrgyzstan
The IDF Task Force on Insulin, Test Strips and Other Diabetes Supplies will carry out an individual country assessment using the Rapid Assessment Protocol for Insulin Access (RAPIA) in August-September in Kyrgyzstan.
The decision to carry out the assessment follows a successful initial visit by project leader David Beran in June. The IDF Task Force member met with local stakeholders including representatives from the Ministry of Health and diabetes representative organizations such as IDF member the Diabetes Association of Kyrgyzstan.
IDF action plan launched to tackle rising diabetes epidemic in Africa
The International Diabetes Federation African Region (IDF Africa) has launched a critical action plan to address the escalating threat that diabetes poses to the region. The plan identifies three key areas of action: government, primary healthcare and the community, defining a clear step-based strategy for tackling diabetes and implementing the UN Resolution on diabetes in Africa. IDF Africa is now calling for immediate adoption and implementation of the action plan, to tackle a disease which if not addressed soon has potential to threaten the viability of many African economies.
