IDF appoints Special Ambassador for the Rights of People with Diabetes

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Wim Wientjens as IDF Special Ambassador for the Rights of People with Diabetes.

The appointment of this position reflects one of the four goals of the IDF Strategic Plan for 2010-2012, namely to "advance and protect the rights of people with diabetes, and combat discrimination."

Several weeks after the film - titled Bittersweet – aired globally on BBC World, the camera may have stopped rolling, but the wheels are very much in motion to make a difference to one special young man.

United in prevention: IDF supports World Cancer Day

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a global health emergency threatening the lives of hundreds of millions of people. The four NCDs - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and respiratory disease - are by far the leading causes of mortality in the world, responsible for 35 million deaths a year, 28 million of which occur in low and middle-income countries. Many of these premature deaths are avoidable.

IDF awards US$2 million to 9 global diabetes research projects

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has reinforced its support to translational research in diabetes with the second round of its funding programme, BRIDGES (Bringing Research in Diabetes to Global Environments and Systems).

Nine new diabetes research projects will be funded for a total of US$2 million over the next three years as part of the translational research grant programme.

Diary from Haiti: Hope amid the rubble

The International Diabetes Federation has received a personal account of the ongoing relief effort from its member association in Haiti. Project coordinator Dr Nancy Larco recounts the day tragedy struck and how despite the dire situation, people with diabetes in Port-au-Prince are receiving medical attention and donated supplies.

“On Tuesday, 12 January at 4:53pm, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, destroying more than 60 per cent of the capital Port-au-Prince.

WHO member states urged to remove obstacles in implementing NCD action plan

The World Health Organization (WHO) should urgently address the obstacles to implementing its action plan for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). 

This was the joint call made by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), International Union Against Cancer and the World Heart Federation at the 126th WHO Executive Board Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on January 19.

Generous donation from The Netherlands benefits Life for a Child

Life for a Child has received a very generous donation from Mr. Mike Leers and CZ Health Insurances, a company based in The Netherlands. Mr Leers, who has diabetes and has been active as a diabetes advocate, recently retired as Chairman of the Board of the company. Upon his departure, rather than gifts, he asked his fellow employees to make donations to Life for a Child. The amount raised was then matched by the Supervisory Board of CZ Trust, resulting in a total of €20,000 being donated to the Program. The donation was facilitated by the Dutch Diabetes Association.
