Diary from Haiti: Hope amid the rubble

The International Diabetes Federation has received a personal account of the ongoing relief effort from its member association in Haiti. Project coordinator Dr Nancy Larco recounts the day tragedy struck and how despite the dire situation, people with diabetes in Port-au-Prince are receiving medical attention and donated supplies.

“On Tuesday, 12 January at 4:53pm, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, destroying more than 60 per cent of the capital Port-au-Prince.

WHO member states urged to remove obstacles in implementing NCD action plan

The World Health Organization (WHO) should urgently address the obstacles to implementing its action plan for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). 

This was the joint call made by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), International Union Against Cancer and the World Heart Federation at the 126th WHO Executive Board Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on January 19.

Generous donation from The Netherlands benefits Life for a Child

Life for a Child has received a very generous donation from Mr. Mike Leers and CZ Health Insurances, a company based in The Netherlands. Mr Leers, who has diabetes and has been active as a diabetes advocate, recently retired as Chairman of the Board of the company. Upon his departure, rather than gifts, he asked his fellow employees to make donations to Life for a Child. The amount raised was then matched by the Supervisory Board of CZ Trust, resulting in a total of €20,000 being donated to the Program. The donation was facilitated by the Dutch Diabetes Association.

The Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes extends generous support to Life for a Child

Life for a Child recently received a generous donation from the Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND). FEND was established in 1995 and has become a unique and powerful voice for nurses working in the field of diabetes care, research and education in Europe. The organization works closely with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has just received word from its member association in Haiti confirming that emergency diabetes supplies have arrived and are being distributed to those in need.

Emergency diabetes supplies dispatched to Haiti

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and Australia-based non-governmental organization Insulin for Life have launched a relief effort for people with diabetes in quake-stricken Haiti.

A shipment of insulin, meters, test strips and other supplies has been rushed to the Haitian Foundation for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases (Fondation Haitienne de Diabete et de Maladies Cardio-Vasculaires).

The foundation houses the only dedicated diabetes clinic in Haiti, which is understood to still be standing.

IDF establishes Diabetes Trust Fund for Haiti

Many member associations have contacted the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) concerned about the safety of the national diabetes association in Haiti following the devastating earthquake. We are also receiving offers of support for the Haitian Foundation for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases (Fondation Haitienne de Diabete et de Maladies Cardio-Vasculaires) in these very challenging times.

IDF launches new initiative to promote translational research and twinning

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has launched D-START (Diabetes, Supporting TrAnslational Research and Twinning), an initiative that aims to support the development of innovative projects in low and middle- income countries (LMCs).

D-START will bring together world experts in diabetes and organisations with limited access to funding opportunities. Partnership, transfer of knowledge and sustainability will be the key goals of this new initiative and will undoubtedly contribute to its success.

BBC World to air diabetes documentary

Starting January 12, BBC World will broadcast a film showcasing the burden of diabetes in the developing world. The half-hour documentary - titled Bittersweet - is being aired as part of the BBC’s Kill or Cure series.
