The UN Summit kick-started major progress in diabetes treatment and care:
We have seen progress around the world, with a leading example in access to essential diabetes medicines and technologies by the Pan American Health Organisation:
- After the UN Summit created growing demand by governments for support in diabetes treatment and care, the PAHO Strategic Fund for Essential Public Health Supplies (formerly only for communicable diseases) will include diabetes from September 2012.
- IDF has long advocated for this inclusion, as the Strategic Fund will increase access to affordable, quality assured and lifesaving drugs and technologies for people with diabetes in the Americas, and may be rolled out to other regions in the future.
And governments worldwide are participating in WHO consultations to strengthen health systems and primary healthcare for diabetes and NCDs.
