There are more than 200 deaths due to malaria every year in Cambodia, and the government has calculated more than 1,000 HIV/AIDS-related deaths each year since the most recent prevalence data were collected in 2006. By contrast, in 2010, there were 8,000 diabetes-related deaths in Cambodia. Globally, about 4 million deaths are attributed to diabetes every year, compared to 3 million for AIDS-related illnesses and 1 million for malaria.

A recent report warns that chronic diseases like diabetes could kill up to 4.2 million people per year in Southeast Asia by the year 2030.
