Another Canadian, Leonard Thompson was the first person to receive an injection of insulin as a treatment for diabetes. He received his first injection in Toronto, on 11 January 1922, at 14 years of age. Thompson showed signs of improved health and went on to live 13 more years taking doses of insulin until he died of pneumonia, aged 27.
