Diabetes, now a global epidemic, is the fourth leading cause of death in Taiwan. The most recent epidemiological data demonstrated that the prevalence of diabetes is approaching 5% and that the number of people with diabetes in Taiwan
has reached 1.2 million. In order to comprehensively assess diabetes care in Taiwan, a nationally standardized programme has been in place since 2001, which includes performance measures that can evaluate accurately and reliably the quality of diabetes care. The authors describe the characteristics and achievements of the Diabetes Case Management Program 2001 (DCMP 2001).
