Of all the serious and costly complications affecting individuals with diabetes – heart disease, kidney failure and blindness – foot complications take the greatest toll.
Up to 70 percent of all lower extremity amputations are related to diabetes. In some areas, levels as high as 90 percent have even been described. In the USA, more than 50,000 diabetes-related amputations are performed annually. However, several countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation have created goals, objectives and declarations aiming to drastically reduce the rate of amputations.
