One Year On - International Cooperation [1]

Diabetes has been elevated to the top of the international agenda - and stayed there. We have seen unprecedented levels of international cooperation on diabetes and NCDs post-Summit:

  • The heads of WHO and UNDP [2] (Margaret Chan + Helen Clarke) instructed all WHO/UNDP country offices to include NCDs in national development strategies.
  • UNAIDs and WHO [3] agreed to collaborate on integrating the HIV/AIDs and NCD response in low and middle income countries - focusing on joint advocacy and technical support
  • USA and India Ministers for Health are collaborating on joint diabetes research and BRICS Health Ministers are committed to cooperation on diabetes + NCDs.
  • The UN Summit was a breakthrough for recognition of diabetes and NCDs as development issues, and IDF and the NCD Alliance continue to keep these diseases at the top of international agenda: including at the the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting; the World Conference on the Social Determinants of Health; and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) [4]
  • Diabetes and NCDs are at the heart of the United Nations – included in Resolutions of the Commissions of Women and Population and Development, ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review, UN Task Team Report on the Future Development Agenda after 2015; and the UNDP Consultations on the Future Development Framework in 2012.

And major international financial commitments for diabetes + NCDs have been pledged:
- Australia =  $4 million to WHO to implement NCD action plan and $25 million for NCDs in Pacific Islands
- Russia = USD 36 million to global NCD response and addressing NCDs in least developed countries
- South Korea = USD 4.5 million over 5 years for NCDs
