TeamBG and IDF Europe join forces for GSMA mHealth Grand Tour cycle ride from Brussels to Barcelona

Biking for diabetes: the International Diabetes Federation Europe joins the Team Blood Glucose squad

London & Brussels: Riders from IDF Europe will join TeamBG on the GSMA mHealth Grand Tour, a cycle ride from Brussels to Barcelona in September 2013. The joint team will be made up of non-professional riders, all with one mission: to raise awareness of diabetes and of the importance of sports and exercise as a tool for the management of all types of diabetes and in some cases, the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Raising awareness and demonstrating that amateur riders with diabetes can take part in any sporting challenge, the squad is made up of riders representing the Diabetes Online Community (#doc). “We have riders from all over the world sharing a common goal: to demonstrate that anyone living with the chronic, lifelong condition that is diabetes can achieve their sporting and exercise goals” said Paul Buchanan, TeamBG Founder & CEO.

“By joining forces with TeamBG on the tour, we want to educate, empower and inspire people living with diabetes. We look forward to engaging with the diabetes community all over Europe to spread the word and show that anything is possible even when you live with this condition”, added Sophie Peresson, IDF Europe Regional Director.

Worldwide there are 371 million people with diabetes. In Europe alone, 55 million people live with diabetes – that is 8.5% of Europe’s adult population. Modern lifestyles, eating habits and lack of physical activity are important risk factors for developing diabetes. Through their partnership on the GSMA mHealth Grand Tour, IDF Europe and TeamBG will raise awareness on the benefits of sports and physical activity not only for diabetes prevention, but also as an essential tool in the self-management and therapy of diabetes.

The mHealth Grand Tour is organized by the GSMA, the organization that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide. The GSMA mHealth Grand Tour will bring together the diabetes community and the mobile and healthcare industries to raise awareness of diabetes and to promote healthy and active living, and also to showcase how mobile health solutions can empower people with diabetes.
