Dafydd Llyr was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2008. He thought it would be the end of the world as he wouldn't be able to continue his career as a professional actor.
He struggled for a year to come to terms with his diabetes and routines and found that there was very little support for young people in his area. Despite these obstacles Dafydd continued to fight and learn to control his condition and has pushed to change the mind set of directors who have told him he should choose a different career due to his condition as it will stop him from ever getting professional work. He pushed for parts and has worked professionally for Welsh TV and Theatre. Making sure that both cast and crews were aware of the condition and educate them throughout the productions.
Recently after deciding to go back to University and gain a BA honours in Creative Writing, Dafydd is planning on writing a script for a local Welsh TV Station about a young boys’ struggle with diabetes and coming out as gay. He has also started his own online project called Life Is Sweet, which he hopes will become a site full of his blogs about his condition and how he has progressed over the past 4 years. The site will also include a section where others can submit their stories on the subject too, whether they have diabetes, type one or two or are parents of those with diabetes.
Through this project Llyr hopes to boost the knowledge of young people and those in education (whether studying or teaching) about diabetes.
