Dr. Jane Wamai
My WDD hero is Dr. Jane Wamai, a dentist. On November 2002, I started feeling weak, tired and thirsty all the time. I decided to take anti-malaria drugs because I thought that I had malaria. At the hospital, doctors told me that I had amoeba and typhoid. I took the medicine that I was prescribed but my health got worse. I developed a cough which later became persistent.
Dr.Jane called her sister and told her to tell me to go to the capital Nairobi to be visited by a doctor. I was living with my mother and as she couldn't afford to pay the bills, Dr.Jane took care of everything. She took me to the hospital where I was diagnosed with diabetes and tuberculosis. Dr.Jane taught me how to administer insulin, how to eat the right food and made sure I had everything I needed. She even bought me a glucose meter so that I could monitor my sugar.
She has been a family friend for a very long time and I owe her a lot. If it were not for her maybe I would have died and people would not have known the cause of my death.
