On 22-25 May 2014, EU citizens from across the 28 Member States elected a new European Parliament, comprising 751 members (MEPs) to represent their interests from 2014 to 2019. As the European Parliament is the only directly elected European Institution, these elections are a unique opportunity for the European diabetes community to encourage EU policy-makers to commit to the diabetes cause.
In order to help you better understand the European elections and to support you in your advocacy work, IDF Europe had developed a European Elections Toolkit. The first section of the toolkit looks at the European Parliament, how it is works, the political groups that compose it and how it influences legislation.
The second section of the toolkit looks more closely at the upcoming European elections and at the challenges and opportunities they represent for the diabetes community. It also provides information about candidates (lists and websites) as well as tips on how to reach out to them.

We hope that you will find this toolkit useful and we welcome your feedback.
Thank you very much for your support in helping us to win the diabetes vote in Europe!
