Simon Busuttil wins MEP Award in Health

Member of European Parliament Simon Busuttil was awarded the 2012 MEP of the Year Award in the Health category for his continuous and successful efforts to put diabetes on the EU agenda.

The award was presented by EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic at a ceremony in Brussels yesterday evening in recognition of Simon Busuttil’s work in the European Parliament to improve the lives of people living with diabetes in Europe.

Receiving the award, Simon Busuttil declared: “This prize means that diabetes is finally on the EU agenda.” He then dedicated the prize to the 52 million people living with diabetes across the European Union.

Simon Busuttil is one of the Co-Chairs of the EU Diabetes Working Group in the European Parliament. Through this working group, he has worked to bring together various institutions and stakeholders to put diabetes on the EU agenda. In March 2012 the EUDWG successfully pushed for a resolution through the European Parliament to address the EU diabetes epidemic which was adopted by an overwhelming majority. This was the first time that the European Parliament adopted a resolution specifically on diabetes.
