Dr. Edwin Jiménez from Costa Rica is the Chair of the South and Central America (SACA) Region of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for 2013-2015. A surgeon since 1982, he graduated from the University of Costa Rica and completed his postgraduate diploma in Family Medicine and Community at the same University. He has worked in the Costa Rican Social Security (CCSS) for twenty-three years occupying managerial positions from Primary Care Coordinator to Director of the Technical Department of the CCSS. His experience in the public sector has been supplemented with private practice as a physician specialised in family medicine, with emphasis on people with diabetes.
His interest in diabetes is born of personal experience, his mother and father having died from cardiac and cerebral events resulting from complications of diabetes.
Motivated by his mentor in diabetes Dr. Eric Mora, Dr Jiménez became actively involved with the IDF SACA Region, serving on the Regional Council and organising training courses for health professionals in diabetes.
Dr Jiménez has participated as a delegate in activities of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) and worked with diabetes associations from all over the SACA Region.
