Food policy update – The Council of European Ministries of Health adopts Conclusions on Food Product Improvement

On the 17th June, 2016, the Council of European Ministries of Health led by the Dutch Presidency holders adopted a set of recommendations aimed at making healthy food choices more available to everyone in Europe. The Conclusions take the positive step of recognising the burden of overweight and obesity among children which is a serious cause for concern, and the role of nutrition, alongside other lifestyle related matters.

In 2016, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of an injection of “an aqueous pancreatic extract” into a diabetic dog by Dr. Nicolae Paulescu, and the 95th anniversary of the initial experiments for the discovery of insulin by Dr. Frederick Banting and Dr. Charles Best, the fathers of insulin. Through education, daily commitment and perseverance they made, together with their team at the University of Toronto, a tremendous difference in the lives of millions of people with diabetes.

Mother's Day 2016 - Mothers are heros! Let's keep them strong.

 “Communities and countries, and ultimately the world are only as strong as the health of their women[1]”. One in 11 European adult women lives with diabetes today. Many more are at high risk, and gestational diabetes is increasing.  Over 140.000 children have type 1 diabetes in the European region and 21.600 more are diagnosed each year, thus also impacting the life of their mothers. Women should be the first to be protected against the diabetes pandemic.

405 MEPs sign Written Declaration 0008/2016!

The International Diabetes Federation European Region (IDF Europe) welcomes Written declaration 0008/2016 on diabetes for adoption by the European Parliament.

IDF Europe releases position paper on added sugar

On the occasion of the European Commission meeting “Towards better prevention and management of chronic diseases” (21 April), IDF Europe is pleased to release its position on added sugar. This is a topic of great relevance for diabetes currently being debated at EU level.

2016 Youth Leadership Camp to be hosted by the Cyprus Diabetic Association

Join a group of youth advocates from all across Europe to share your challenges and triumphs and learn from each other's experiences at the 2016 IDF Europe Youth Leadership Camp (YLC)! The 6th edition of the YLC will be held from 11 to 17 July in Agros, Cyprus. We thank the Cyprus Diabetic Association for helping organising it.
