In 2012 the IDF Life for a Child Programme (LFAC) launched an ongoing campaign targeting diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a severe medical complication that occurs primarily in people with type 1 diabetes. Among the diabetes community, it had been recognised for many years that misdiagnosis occured in developing countries.

The IDF Life for a Child Programme's annual Review and Strategy meeting, held in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) 74th Scientific Sessions in San Francisco (June 12-16), was this year attended by over 70 advocates, programme partners, major contributors and other supporters.

Fiji, a country of 333 tropical islands situated in the South Pacific Ocean, proved an easy choice for Diabetes Tasmania's latest charity challenge. Diabetes Tasmania Ambassador, Caroline Thomas, and CEO, Caroline Wells, along with eight fellow adventurers and two guides recently spent 10 days paddling around the Yasawa Islands, an archipelago of some 20 volcanic islands located north west of Lautoka, Fiji's second largest city.
The IDF Life for a Child Programme is currently helping over 18,000 CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH DIABETES IN 42 COUNTRIES.

On April 19 2014, a special fundraiser was held at the Rialto Theatre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to raise money for the IDF Life for a Child Programme. The event was organised as part of a school project by Andria Carosielli, a young woman with type 1 diabetes, and Sandrine Lapointe. Guests included Katia Shannon (author of the documentary Sweet 16), who gave a speech on her work and experience with the Programme in Ecuador.

The IDF Life for a Child Programme is very pleased to have received a generous donation of €35,000 from the Associazione Medici Diabetologi (AMD, Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists), a member association of the International Diabetes Federation.

In developing countries a lack of refrigerators to store insulin is often a barrier for people with diabetes. Children require insulin injections two or more times a day, and insulin can only be stored at room temperature for one month.
