WINGS project: highlights of 2013

2013 began with the development of a curriculum for healthcare professionals (HCPs) caring for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The curriculum has since been finalised, HCPs have been trained on how to use it, and supporting tools have been developed. In the fourth quarter of the year a key milestone was reached with the recruitment of the first women with GDM under the WINGS Model of Care.

With dedicated teams at four clinics and hospitals in Chennai, the implementation of the new model approach to care for GDM is now underway.

With dedicated teams at four clinics and hospitals in Chennai, the implementation of the new model approach to care for GDM is now underway. A standard operating protocol was developed and integrated as a full part of the routine activities of the collaborating health facilities in Chennai and suburbs. This protocol is gradually adjusted with feedback received from HCPs working on the field and complementary methodological tools are being developed.

Another innovative achievement of this period was the development of in-house data collection software by the IT department of Dr Mohan’s clinics. This tool is the project’s main database that captures data from the case report form and follow up activities.

The situation analysis report on GDM in India has been enhanced with additional depth to the retrospective analysis and the pilot screening. Abstracts and scientific papers for publication of its components are progressively presented to the scientific community in and out of India.

In April 2013, the joint IDF and Abbott Fund field visit permitted to see the activities in Chennai, to get familiar with the implementing actors and to identify the operational challenges. Global events, communication and media coverage opportunities have helped to promote the WINGS project at the global level throughout the year. The partial initial findings of the project were presented at the World Diabetes Congress (WDC) in Melbourne, Australia and in Warwick, UK. At WDC in December 2013, the second meeting of the WINGS Expert Committee was held. Expert feedback and contributions were offered by Mr Sonak Pastakia (PharmD, Consultant at the Abbott Fund).
