June 2015

As part of the WINGS project's rural outreach, a community health workers training for health volunteers from all over Tamil Nadu stateon was conducted on 14 June at the Sundaram, Sathya sai trust in Chennai. Around 250 participants from more than 100 villages from various districts of the state attended the one and a half day workshop. A training kit with copies of GDM pamphlets, booklet and CHW manual were distributed to all participants.

The workshop included presentations on diagnosis of gestational diabetes, importance of physical activity and dietary management in women diagnosed with GDM and pregnancy outcomes of GDM. Participants were also introduced to the “snake and ladder game on gestational diabetes” and were asked to play the game and provide feedback and comments on content, ease of usage, flow of messages, color and theme.

Three abstracts from the WINGS project were presented as posters at the 8th International DIP Symposium on Diabetes, Hypertension, Metabolic Syndrome & Pregnancy in Berlin, Germany.

March 2015

IDF conducted a field visit to Chennai during which the WINGS project team met with key contributors and stakeholders at the MDRF diabetes centre and also visited the Andhra Mahila Sabha Clinic.

February 2015

Nutrition Awareness Programme: Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital, Chennai - a community intervention initiative involving pregnant mothers who were screened and diagnosed with gestational diabetes under the WINGS model of care and other pregnant women visiting the Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital for antenatal care.Two balanced diet recipes were demonstrated by the MDRF nutrition department. A game on healthy eating was well received by the participating mothers and prizes were distributed to the winners. Mothers, mother-in-laws and spouses were also invited to participate. About 15 pregnant women and their care givers actively took part in the programme.

During the 50th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Vienna, Austria, Dr V. Mohan, Founder of MDRF and Principal Investigator for the Women in India with GDM Strategy (WINGS) project, gave a poster presentation on "Screening for gestational diabetes mellitus in resource constrained settings".

August 2014

According to the IDF Diabetes Atlas sixth edition, hyperglycaemia in pregnancy is found in around 25% of pregnant women in the IDF South East Asia Region. Many of these women go on to develop gestational diabetes (GDM).
The new ‘Testimonials’ section features stories from women diagnosed with GDM in India and how they manage their condition.

Seven clinics are currently implementing the pilot IDF GDM Model of Care. Two new clinics have started using the project’s protocol for the GDM screening and management of women diagnosed with GDM: The Punjab Association Clinic and the Durgabhai Deshmukh Hospital. Women with GDM are being managed using the new IDF GDM model approach to care protocol. After the deliver, both mothers and babies are followed-up for outcomes. Subsequent analysis of findings is underway.

Counselling and community-based activities are now incorporated into the IDF GDM Model of Care to promote proper nutrition and physical activity at the community level.

A joint field visit with representatives of the Abbott Fund was organised in India (including staff from Abbott Diabetes Care India). This successful visit highlighted the positive impact that the WINGS project has on the quality of life of women living with gestational diabetes.

Three abstracts were accepted for poster presentation: (1) two for the 74th American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions in San Francisco, 2014 and (2) one for the 50th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD, September 2014 in Vienna, Austria).
