Director-General Dr Margaret Chan and the President of Sixty-sixth World Health Assembly, Dr Shigeru Omi, awarded five prizes to leaders in public health at the World Health Assembly (WHA) on Thursday, 23 May. Recipients included the Diabetes Society of the Maldives.
Ms Aishath Shiruhana, representing the Diabetes Society of the Maldives, was honoured jointly alongside Dr An Dong from the People’s Republic of China with the Dr LEE Jong-wook Memorial Prize for Public Health. This is the first time that the prize has been shared.
The Diabetes Society of the Maldives was awarded for its success in creating public awareness around diabetes, promoting interventions for the prevention of Non-communicable Diseases and training local staff to offer counselling and treatment.
