World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide, bringing together millions of people in over 160 countries and uniting the global diabetes community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness. Every year, thousands of local and national events are organised by the member associations of the International Diabetes Federation and by other diabetes representative organisations, healthcare professionals, healthcare authorities, and individuals who want to make a difference.

| The Albanian Diabetes Association is organising numerous activities during the whole month of November. Several talk shows and TV programmes will be organized locally and on national TV about Diabetes; a set of short awareness films will be released at the same time; A training programme for nurses and one for pharmacists will be launched and at least two sessions will be organized during the month; A diabetes exhibition will be organized on the 14th, with the participation of nutritionists and chefs from some well known restaurants who will advise on healthy foods and prepare recipies for the participants: well-known endocrinologists will give lectures about different problems related to diabetes; leaflets, magazines for people with diabetes and screening for unknown diabetes and blood glucose measurements will be offered for free. On the same day, a media conference will be organized for raising awarenness about diabetes, involving young people with diabetes, members of the association. On 17 November, National Conference "Diabetes 2012" will be held in Tirana, with participation of endocrinologists, GP, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Regional Health Authority. |

| Melbourne, Victoria: Diabetes Australia Victoria will be holding events for stakeholders, partners and consumers on November 14. These include, the blue lighting of Hamer Hall, the city’s premier concert venue, a social marketing summit for bloggers at the Grand Hyatt Hotel with Kerry Sparling from the US as the key speaker, the presentation of the Diabetes Australia Research Trust’s Millennium Grant and 20 seeding grants to diabetes researchers for their projects for the coming year, the Kellion Victory Medal ceremony for people who have lived with diabetes for 50, 60 or 70 years. |

| South Eleuthera District: On 17 November, students in grade five of each primary school in the district will be invited to construct a poster that depicts the theme of World Diabetes Day - Diabetes Education and Prevention. Children aged six and above will be encouraged to participate in a walk followed by a screening for weight, blood pressure, and blood glucose. The activity will also feature a fashion show/skit, healthy cooking demonstration and a booth for educational purposes. There will also be a Junkanoo rush-out with the theme "Rush against Diabetes" to promote the benefits of physical activity among the general public. The Bahamas is famous for its Junkanoo parades. |

The premier event held in Barbados, in celebration of Diabetes Awareness Month, is the Diabetes Global Village Expo. The two-day event, which is being held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre seeks to educate the public including persons affected by diabetes as well as medical professionals on the disease. The Global Village Expo seeks to provide a comprehensive programme which caters to our target audience. The event's diverse programme includes a Tradeshow Area, a diverse fitness programme, farmer's market, healthy dish competition, diabetes trivia competition, songwriting competition, ask the professionals segment, people's forum, medical symposium, entertainment with karaoke and local artists.
In addition to the Diabetes Global Village, the Diabetes Association of Barbados will also be hosting several events during the month. These include a Memorial Service for the late John M Grace, SCM (Former Director of the Diabetes Association of Barbados) on Sunday, November 11; a Blue Circle Drive throughout the island on November 14, 2012, during which blue circle pins will be presented to the principals of primary and secondary school; a radio Programme “Talk Yuh Talk” on Q 100.7FM at 9:00am on November 14; outreach at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Q.E.H.) on November 15; a fundraising Dinner on Friday, November 16 at the Plantation Theatre; a sponsored walk at the Garrison Savannah on Saturday, November 17; a World Diabetes Day Concert with The Royal Barbados Police Force Band at Prince Cave Hall, District A Police Station, Station Hill, St. Michael, and a bazaar Saturday, November 24.

The Federation of National Diabetes Associations (FENAD) will be holding their 15th annual nationwide campaign aimed at promoting diabetes awareness and the prevention of diabetes and its complications. Targeting over 1,000 cities, the campaign hopes to engage more than 1 million people in activities that include free screenings and tests for diabetes complications; walks; competitions for school children involving drawing, poetry and storytelling; and exhibitions promoting healthy nutrition. The association is also inviting local governments, institutions and laboratories to join the Blue Monument Challenge and light their buildings in blue for diabetes.
The Brazilian Diabetes Society (SBD) has unveiled its website dedicated to World Diabetes Day which encourages its members and the public to go blue for diabetes this November. It has also launched its version of Blue Fridays, inviting people to post pictures on Facebook of themselves wearing blue for diabetes and will once again be giving out awards to the best diabetes flash mobs organised throughout the country for World Diabetes Day. On 14 November, the Association will be holding a day-long awareness event in one of the main metro stations in the capital Brasilia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Catholic University of Brasilia.
The Juvenile Diabetes Association of Brazil (ADJ) will focus its awareness activities in Sao Paulo, where it will organise free diabetes screenings in a number of shopping malls and light several local monuments and landmarks in blue to mark the day.

| Itabuna: Around 2000 ophthalmoscopic examinations and 2000 screenings for diabetic foot will be carried out on 14 November. There will be a Multidisciplinary Diabetes Fair open to the public with more than 20 booths and educational services (blood glucose, blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, nutrition workshop, workshop diabetic foot, self-monitoring, using insulin, cardiac orientation , ophthalmic guidance, legal advice, social security, occupational therapy and psychological counseling, guidance endocrinology, and physical education, among others). There will be a public celebration of World Diabetes Day on stage with representatives of local and national associations and the Secretary of Health of the State of Bahia, Itabuna Prefecture, among other authorities and representatives of organized society. The event will be broadcast live over 2 hours on TV RecordNews for almost the entire Northeast of Brazil. There will also be a television program within the Workforce with the presence of some national and local artists, interviews and all matters related to combating Diabetes, in addition to a massive campaign on TV for more than 1 month, in addition to print, radio and internet (www.mutiraododiabetico.com.br). Canadian Diabetes Association celebrations: Bass River, Nova Scotia: Students formed a blue circle at West Colchester Consolidated School. In total, 106 Students, Grades five through nine formed a circle around their auditorium with blue crepe ribbons held by each seated student. The students then counted to three and jumped up from sitting on the floor holding the ribbon and shouted “We Will Find A Cure!” London, ON: The National Historic Site of Canada (the birthplace of insulin) located in London, Ontario. Banting House is where Sir Frederick Banting woke up with the idea that led to the discovery of insulin. He later won The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923 for this discovery. The Canadian Diabetes Association not only preserves the historic significance of Banting House for future generations, but it also maintains the Flame of Hope as a a reminder to the world of what we are fighting for and building on Banting’s legacy. On 14 November, approximately 1,400 students and staff from Sir Frederick G. Banting Secondary School walked for 30 minutes to raise funds for diabetes research. Later that evening, Banting House was illuminated in blue to recognize WDD and to launch the opening of the Dear Dr. Banting exhibit. The exhibit includes a collection of letters expressing their gratitude, struggles, emotional journeys and hopes for a cure, who have been touched by diabetes and inspired by the discovery of insulin. Also, a comparison of the letters written to Dr. Banting from 1924 to 1934 and from 2005 to 2012 is now on display at the museum, along with countless other Banting items of historical significance. Regina, Saskatchewan: A diabetes risk assessment was held for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and staff at the Saskatchewan Legislative, which provided valuable information to people who are unknowingly suffering from or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The risk assessment provided individuals with a blood pressure check, waist circumference measurement and risk factor questionnaire to catch danger signs for diabetes and diabetes complications. Healthcare professionals from the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region's Metabolic & Diabetes Education Centre were available to discuss information with participants on how to lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and make recommendations for follow-up. In addition, an MLA reception was held in the evening where MLA's were invited to hear about the severity of diabetes in Saskatchewan and learn about the Association’s Saskatchewan region’s advocacy recommendations to the government to help people living with diabetes in the province. Sarnia: the Canadian Diabetes Association Sarnia & District Branch and North/West Lambton Community Health Centre is organising an information night and cooking demo entitled “Enjoy the Holidays….with all the Trimmings”. | New Tecumseth, ON: The Council of the Corporation of the Town of New Tecumseth proclaims November 14 as World Diabetes Day in the Town of New Tecumseth. The Town urges all residents to help fight this disease by increasing awareness of the risk factors for diabetes, making healthy lifestyle choices and providing care and treatment to those living with diabetes. |

Together with physicians and pinned personalities they will motivate people to take action, promote health and help stop the diabetes epidemic. |

| Copenhagen: the national chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes and Research Foundation (JDRF) will be holding a special gala and reception to mark World Diabetes Day. The reception is targeted at policy and decision makers in the health sector and aims, in an informal setting, to provide an update on the diabetes problem in Denmark and what we can do about it. It will include the presentation of concrete proposals and measures to reduce the risk of developing diabetes complications and making life easier for those affected by the disease. This will be followed by the "Rock the Cure" gala, which this year will have an 80s theme and feature the country's top artists performing to raise funds for JDRF's work in diabetes research. Both events will be held at the classic Moltkes Palæ in Copenhagen, which will light in blue for the occasion. Many prominent individuals will be in attendance and all will be asked to wear the blue circle pin and have their picture taken as part of the WDD Pin a Personality campaign. |

At the local and national level, the Danish Diabetes Association is engaging in several activities on World Diabetes Day both at national and local level. Focus this year is on awareness that type 2 diabetes is linked to family history and on prevention in high risk groups. A large screening and awareness campaign targeted at undiagnosed people with type 2 will be carried out in collaboration with around 100 Danish Pharmacists and Healthcare Centers all over the country. In the last thirteen years, 30.000 contacts have been made with nearly all "active radio amateurs" countries. Over 630 hours of constant signals with information about diabetes have been broadcast. The worldwide transmission from Slovenia will take place from November 16 to 18 on almost all amateur frequencies. |

Portland, OR: Pacific Northwest Diabetes Health & Wellness Week (PNDW) is the annual, week-long premier event that unites the Pacific Northwest diabetes community in a collaborative effort to promote “living active”. Founded by Chris Dudley Foundation and Novo Nordisk, each year PNDW touches the lives of thousands of people through a series of activities that increase diabetes awareness and showcase community resources.
Circle on the Court is the kick-off event for PNDW. The event takes place on November 10, 2012 at the Rose Garden Arena and is FREE to the public. It’s a day dedicated to bringing awareness and education to our community about living a healthy and active life.

Diabetes Plate Poetry is a new outreach event to celebrate World Diabetes Day. Diabetes Plate Poetry describes the emotional experience of living with diabetes. | Harrisburg, PA: Health Education---Know the ABCs of Diabetes! will be held on November 14 at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building, East Wing Rotunda, with free Health Screenings (Blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure), and speeches by NBA Legend Bob Lanier, Renu Joshi, MD from Pinnacle Health, Several State Legislators, Chief of Staff Todd Shamash and Acting Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Michael Wolfe. The PA State Capitol Building's outdoor fountain will be lit in blue. |

| The Yemen Diabetes Association will be organising several activities for World Diabetes Day. These include visiting more than 14 secondary schools in Sana'a to hold lectures to students and teachers during the morning Assembly about diabetes prevention and how to deal with it. During the visits the Association will also establish schools groups for diabetes prevention and emergency management. |
