Ashlee Ernst

Ashlee Ernst

I’ve decided to nominate my daughter Ashlee because I think she deserves it.

Ashlee is 17 years old and was diagnosed at with type 1 diabetes at age 9. She has a goal of participating in more activities than other youth without diabetes and doing them all better than the others. She has a love of volunteering and focuses a lot of her efforts on mentoring others both younger and older than her who live with type 1.

Last May the town of Joplin Missouri USA had a tornado strike. Ashlee had a friend with type 1 who lived there and lost everything in the storm. She started a nationwide drive to collect donations of supplies and money for people with diabetes that were affected. On her own she collected over $13,000 in cash and supplies. She has also raised over $10,000 for JDRF through her efforts for the Walk to Cure.

Ashlee has just returned from a month living in Norway as an exchange student. At Drottingborg School she mentored and motivated two students with type 1 diabetes that did not take care of themselves. She motived them toward improved self-care and is following up with them online to help them stay on track.

My daughter has been an inspiration to so many people since her diagnosis. She strives to prove to everyone that you should have no limits in life and that everyone should try their hardest and help each other out. She never ceases to amaze me at what she can accomplish while thriving with type 1 diabetes.
