My WDD hero is my mother, Ljiljana. She may not be doing much globally for diabetes awareness, but I think every mother with a child with diabetes is not only a hero, but a superhero. I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of six and I am now a 33-year-old woman with a beautiful 16-month-old son and living a normal and healthy life.
My mother was the only one able to give me injections several times a day. She has taught me discipline and that diabetes is not a disease but a way of living. I have no idea how she must have felt or what she was going through, but I know that although I have had diabetes for 27 years, I do not have a single complication (I point this out because doctors seem to be surprised by this) and can accomplish everything I want in my life.
So, thank you mum and thank you to all the brave mums around the world.
