Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2014.

Member of YLD since 2015 (YLD Candidate).

I am an avid outdoor enthusiast and competitive multisport and adventure racer who is passionate about adventure and health. I was diagnosed with diabetes in November 2014 after returning home from a 6 month trip overseas. I was quite surprised at my diagnosis but I quickly became accustomed to life with diabetes and I have not let it stop me from doing all the things I love to do. A positive attitude and lots of perseverance has helped me adapt and learn better ways to thrive with this disease.

My project: in 2017 I will complete a self-powered journey the length of New Zealand to raise more awareness of diabetes in New Zealand and educate children in particular, on what diabetes is and how we can both prevent it and live well with it. I would also really like to tackle the misconceptions around this multi-faceted disease. The project is going to take roughly 6 weeks from the middle of October to the end of November and it will encompass Diabetes Awareness Month in November. I will be mountain biking, road cycling, rafting, running, kayaking, long-boarding, swimming and paddle boarding my way down the country and I will be using a GPS tracking system on my website so that people can track me throughout my journey. I will be stopping to talk to some schools along the way but due to the difficulty of timing, I will be engaging with most schools and everyone else, by way of small videos, interviews and podcasts as I go.
