Timeline of the UN Summit on NCDs

2006

UN General Assembly adopted the landmark resolution UNR 61/225 on diabetes, recognising that the disease is “chronic, debilitating and costly” on the 18th January

2009

The NCD Alliance was formed on the 19th May by the International Diabetes Federation, World Heart Federation and International Union against Cancer, with the subsequent addition of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease  

2010

UN General Assembly unanimously passed the resolution A/RES/64/265 on the 13th May to hold a UN High-Level Summit on NCDs in September 2011

UN General Assembly adopted the Modalities Resolution A/65/L.50 in December, which determined the scope, format and organisation of the UN Summit on NCDs

2011

WHO Regional Consultations on NCDs took place throughout all WHO Regions, and helped shape the draft declaration

UN Civil Society Hearing on Summit held in New York. IDF helped to shape the Hearing agenda, IDF Vice President Ruth Colagiuri was a panelist, and IDF CEO was invited to make an intervention from the floor

The first Global Ministerial Conference on healthy lifestyles and NCDs adopted the Moscow Declaration on NCDs in April 

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of NCDs A/66/L.1 on the 19th September
