Insulin be prepared expect the unexpected landscape visual 01

This webinar organised by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) provided an opportunity to learn about the importance of preparedness to ensure people living with diabetes have a stable supply of insulin in emergency situations.

Every year, millions of people are affected by natural and man-made disasters. The supply of medicines – including insulin – can be disrupted during these emergency situations. This can have devastating effects on people living with type 1 diabetes, who need daily insulin shots to survive. It can also have a negative impact on people living with type 2 diabetes who need insulin to adequately manage their condition. Appropriate preparedness is key for a fast response in case of emergency, and to ensure that people living with diabetes can continue to access the insulin and other care they need.

Speakers included healthcare professionals, academics and people living with diabetes:

  • Prof Andrew Boulton – IDF President, UK
  • Dr Helen Bygrave – Chronic Disease Advisor for MSF's Access Campaign, Médecins Sans Frontières, South Africa
  • Prof Oliver Schnell – Forschergruppe Diabetes e.V., Helmholtz Center, Munich, Germany
  • Dr Lorenzo Moja – Secretariat, WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, Italy
  • Prof Alicia Jenkins – Professor, Sydney Medical University, Australia
  • Prof Weiping Jia – Past President, Chinese Diabetes Society, China
  • Ms Cyrine Farhat – IDF Blue Circle Voice member, Lebanon
