The Slovakian Diabetes Society (Slovenská diabetologická spoločnosť – SDS) is a voluntary civil association of health care professionals whom are for diabetes mellitus missions established in 1968 by prof. MUDr. Rudolf Korec, DrSc. It is a collective member of the Slovak Medical Association and a full member of the International Diabetes Federation since 3 May 1993. The forms of membership are full and honorary.

Main Focus

  • To secure funding, political support and full realization of new version of National Diabetes Programme of the Slovak Republic, continue specialization in field of diabetology, metabolic disorders and nutritions, prepare consensuses, publications, professional journals and recommendations about screening, optimal control and treatment of diabetes mellitus and acute and chronic complications.
  • To inform about right and responsibilities of diabetic patients and health care professionals, protect the rights of diabetic patients as a patients, consumers and citizens.
  • To improve educating diabetic patients, family members, health care professionals and risk groups.
  • To act as effective promoter of modern diabetology, prevention of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrom, obesity, acute, chronic, economical, social and societal complications.


The main activities of SDS are:

  • Blue Circle, Briefings, Broadcast, Contributions, Global Diabetes Walk, Media Conferences, Screenings for World Diabetes Day (from 1991)
  • National Diabetes Days with international participation (from 1991)
  • Summer School of Diabetology for diabetological nurses, dietitian nurses, home-nursing agencies and diabetes educators (from 2000)
  • Slovak Obesitology Days (from 2003)
  • Scientific Conference Dedicated to Memory of Founder of the Slovakian Diabetes Society Emeritus Professor Rudolf Korec in Topoľčianky (from 2004)
  • Special education and screening programmes for diabetic patients and public (from 1991)
  • Project Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and Metabolic Syndrome in Slovak Republic confirmed 7 % prevalence of diabetes mellitus and 20 % prevalence of metabolic syndrom in whole Slovakia (Diabetes Res Clin Pract. 2008 Aug, 81(2):238-42)

Message from the President

Dr Emil Martinka "As a member of the IDF, we prefer cooperation, early diagnosis, intensive treatment and adequate health care with permanent implementation of evidence-based medicine practice, cost-effective strategies, making an effective and safe treatment widest layer of diabetic patients, better care coordination, standardization of treatment, introduction of indicators of quality of care and other tools. These trends are trying to navigate the modern slovak diabetology.“
