Mobilising for diabetes

One of IDF Europe's main activities is policy and advocacy at the regional and national level.

At regional level, the main targets of IDF Europe are the EU Institutions (European Parliament and European Commission), the Council of Europe and the World Health Organization European Region.

At national level, the Federation acts as a bridge for its Members by informing them on the latest policy developments Europe-wide. This way, national members can perfom their policy and advocay activities at national level, using regional activities as a reference.

With the support of Sarah Ludford MEP, IDF Europe organised a two-week campaign to raise awareness of diabetes on the occasion of World Diabetes Day on the 3 sites of the European Parliament in Brussels and Luxembourg from 11 to 15 November and in Strasbourg from 18 to 22 November.

This year again, IDF Europe renewed its partnership with Sodexo, the catering services of the European Parliament, to raise awareness of diabetes and healthy lifestyle. The initiative included a healthy, balanced dish (“vitality dish”) on offer at the restaurants of the European Parliament all week, allowing IDF Europe to reach out to several thousand people.

In addition, IDF Europe partnered with the European Parliament’s Sports Centre to organise special sports sessions and encourage people to become more active by giving them free trial cards to access the sports centre facilities and collective sports classes.

On 13 November, a special was brought on the IDF Europe study on Access to Quality Medicines and Medical Devices for Diabetes Care in Europe. The initial findings of the study were debated with policy-makers and experts at a breakfast meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels.

In the afternoon, Sarah Luford MEP and Paola Testori Coggi, Director-General of DG SANCO, also hosted the award ceremony of the IDF Europe Prizes in Diabetes, which was followed by a health fruit and vegetable cocktail.
