Presenting new epidemiological and diabetes-related impact data.
The IDF Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region includes 21 countries and territories, currently representing 29 diabetes organisations.
Over the past three decades, major social and economic changes have transformed many of the countries in the IDF Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA). Some Gulf States such as United Arab Emirates (UAE) or Qatar have undergone rapid economic growth and urbanization, associated with reduced infant mortality and increasing life expectancy. Other countries in the Region have seen a decrease in economic growth due to dramatic political changes.
According to the IDF Diabetes Atlas 10th Edition, approximately 73 million adults aged 20-79 years were living with diabetes in the MENA region in 2021. The Region has the highest percentage (24.5%) of diabetes-related deaths in people of working age.
The elected IDF Representatives for the MENA Region for 2023-24 are:
Chair: Prof. Mohamed Sandid, Lebanon
Chair-Elect: Prof Mohamed Eltom, Sudan
