Diabetes in South and Central America

  • 33 million adults (20-79) are living with diabetes in the IDF SACA Region in 2021. This figure is estimated to increase to 40 million by 2030 and 49 million by 2045.
  • 11 million adults living with diabetes in the IDF SACA Region are undiagnosed - 33% of the total number of adults living with diabetes in the region.
  • Diabetes is responsible for 410,000 deaths in the IDF SACA Region in 2021.
  • 47 million adults (20-79) in the IDF SACA Region have Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), which places them at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This number is expected to reach 46 million by 2030 and 53 million by 2045.
  • USD 65 billion was spent on healthcare for people with diabetes in 2021.
  • 1 in 6 live births in the IDF SACA Region are affected by hyperglycaemia in pregnancy.
