In 1981, a group of doctors and individuals wanted to set up an organisation with the aim of providing social services to people with diabetes and establish a centre for dissemination of information on diabetes. This group of people founded Persatuan Diabetis Malaysia (Malaysian Diabetes Association) as a non-profit, non governmental organisation, registered in 1983 under the societies Act 1966.
The Association changed its name in 2013 to Diabetes Malaysia. The Association has 14 State Branches and 41 District Branches.
